The Sydney Metro West project is a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at delivering a new, 24-kilometre underground rail line connecting the central business districts (CBDs) of Parramatta and Sydney. This project is split into several key packages, including the Central Package, which focuses on the section from Sydney Olympic Park to The Bays Precinct.
The scope of the Central Package includes the excavation and construction of 11 kilometres of twin tunnels, five new stations, a TBM launch site, and other critical infrastructure elements, exemplifying the scale and significance of this undertaking.
SafeSmart Access has been working with Tier 1 contractors across the span of the project from The Bays and onwards towards Syndey Olympic Park.

Our contributions significantly enhanced the project’s safety protocols, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Their innovative solutions for temporary works were paramount in maintaining strict safety standards and ensuring seamless progress.
Implemented 1500Lm of Adaptapanel, each 2 meters in height, ensuring a secure working environment for excavation teams. Mandated and approved for all Sydney Olympic Park, Strathfield, Burwood, Burwood Shaft, Five Dock East, Five Dock West, and The Bays Station sites, Adaptapanel was a game changer in edge protection.
The Adaptapanel system wrapped around the void edge allowing spoil to be removed via cranes, and protecting walkways around ground level.
Throughout the sites, a combination of Adaptapanel and Proscaf facilitated access around work areas without inhibiting plant operators or site pedestrians. The edge protection system can be reinstalled at future sites.
Designed, fabricated, and supplied 150 steel Tunnel Hop Up Platforms for the inspection of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation (ME&I) along the curved tunnels.
Fixed securely along the tunnel, these platforms enabled safe access for inspectors and workers, ensuring they could carry out their duties without compromising on safety. The design took into consideration the unique requirements of the curved tunnels, demonstrating SSA’s capability to deliver tailored solutions in complex environments.
A thorough consultation process investigating both aluminium and steel options, steel was selected as the ideal choice for these platforms.
SafeSmart Access provided AdjustaStairs systems to the excavation sites at The Bays. AdjustaStairs are adjustable stair access solutions that cater to uneven ground surfaces typically found in excavation sites.
These stairs enhanced worker mobility and safety by offering stable and reliable access routes across different levels of the site. The flexibility of AdjustaStairs meant they could be easily reconfigured as the excavation work progressed, proving to be an indispensable tool in maintaining high safety standards while optimising operational efficiency.
SafeSmart Access designed a bespoke scaffold walkway system using Proscaf components. This solution comprised a 2 meters wide by 19 meters long scaffold deck equipped with marine-grade carpet to ensure durability and extra traction.
The custom walkway was constructed by the experts at Builtrite Scaffolding to span over the haul road, effectively separating pedestrian traffic from vehicle operations and eliminating potential hazards from people-plant interactions.
For the Central Tunnelling Packages, SafeSmart Access in partnership with Conquip, provided essential lifting solutions to support the project’s complex demands. A suite of specialised lifting cages was supplied to safely transport materials into station boxes and assist the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) teams across multiple locations, including Burwood, Sydney Olympic Park, and The Bays.
Additionally, Conquip’s BulkX Direct-to-Truck system for efficient excavation at Five Dock Station. This innovative system streamlined the excavation process by facilitating direct loading of spoil into trucks, minimising delays and increasing productivity on-site.
