Figure 1: Managing the risk of falls at workplaces, Safe Work Australia, 2018, Total fall distance before this particular configuration would be effective in arresting a fall is 6.5 m

A harness won't save you on a low roof.

On a typical Australian single-story home (with a eave height between 2.4m and 3.0m), a harness is incapable of arresting a fall before the worker strikes the ground.

The Math of a Fall

To understand why harnesses fail on low-rise sites, we have to look at the Required Fall Clearance. This is the minimum vertical distance needed to stop a fall safely without hitting the surface below.

The standard calculation for fall clearance is:

  • Lanyard Length: 2.0m

  • Energy Absorber/Deceleration: 1.7m

  • Worker Height & Stretch: 1.8m

  • Safety Factor: 1.0m (Standard clearance from ground)

  • Total Required Fall Clearance: 6.5m

On a 3-metre roof, you will strike the ground 3.5m before your harness fully engages. Passive collective protection, such as EasyRail, is one way to eliminate this “fall-to-ground” risk.

When we apply these industry standards, the danger becomes clear:

The Result

Ground impact occurs before the lanyard engages.

Even if the anchor point is positioned correctly, low-roof environments are susceptible to the “Swing Down” effect.

If a worker falls from the edge, the pendulum motion allowed by the lanyard length can cause them to strike the ground or structures below before the system can tighten.

What does that mean for you working at heights?

SafeWork Commissioners say it best as “Falls from heights are a primary cause of traumatic injuries and fatalities at NSW workplaces. SafeWork NSW remains committed to supporting industry and workplaces to keep their workers who are at height safe. Businesses with workers exposed to heights are encouraged to complete the ‘working at heights in construction safety checklist’.

But behind the checklists and the compliance is a grim reality. When the system fails, the consequences are permanent.

Incident

A worker fell from the roof after looking for a harness point. Suffered a fractured wrist, elbow, and lost/chipped teeth.

A worker suffered traumatic head and brain injuries after tripping on a skylight and falling about 10 metres while cleaning a roof.

A worker fell 3.8 metres onto concrete due to improperly constructed scaffolding, suffering brain bleeding, a broken skull and face, and two collapsed and badly bruised lungs.

Outcome

Company director convicted and fined $101,250.

Two companies were fined a total of $590,000.

The company was fined $225,000 and later liquidated.

The Real Cost

It’s easy to look at these as “sanitised” statements from a government website. But every criminal case on NSW Caselaw tells a story of excruciating pain.
All these workers have names and have their own families. And yet it is the same story again and again:

A worker. A worker. A worker.
Suffered. Suffered. Suffered.
A son. A brother. A father.

Lives are forever changed, ended, from split-second decisions about what controls to use.

Engineering & Compliance Standards

The EasyRail system was engineered to meet the rigorous design loads specified in AS/NZS 4994.1:2009. While the 2023 edition has expanded configuration requirements, the fundamental design loads remain consistent, ensuring the EasyRail system provides the robust structural integrity required for residential and commercial roofing.

  • Access & Egress: Please note that specific access and egress points (required by AS/NZS 4994.2:2023) are not shown in promotional diagrams for visual clarity. SafeSmart provides fully compliant access solutions to be used in conjunction with the EasyRail system upon request.

  • Incentive Ladder Specs: The bonus Fibreglass Sliding Extension Ladder (2.88m – 4.72m) is manufactured to AS 1892.1:2018.

  • Load Rating: While the minimum requirement for industrial portable ladders is 120kg, our bonus ladders feature a 150kg load rating—the industry standard for heavy-duty professional trade use.
